The Process: Start to Finish

Rural farmers in the hills of the Himalayan region have limited access to resources, markets, and capital. Poor road conditions, long journeys to city center and the cost of equipment/expansion prevents many rural farmers from commercializing their harvests. Forming a cooperative pools resources and has allowed the group to establish partnerships with local and international organizations.

The Process

Step 1. Farmers till the land to prepare it for sowing the seeds.

Step 2. Seeds are sown and taken care of using pesticide-free fertilizers and efficient irrigation techniques.

Step 3. In approximately 8-10 months, the turmeric is ready to be harvested. 50 percent of the crop will be dried and crushed to powder, 50 percent will remain fresh root.

Step 4. Harvests are purchased wholesale, shipped (domestic and international), and brought to local markets.

Step 5. Farmers are supported through the purchase of each sale and receive the social benefit of community, shared resources, access to capital and market participation.
