What is a Cooperative?

A cooperative is a socio-economic model where individuals establish a unified goal based on a collective benefit or shared problem. In the context of our turmeric cooperative, members participate in a ‘land pooling’ initiative, benefit from shared equipment and facilities, and receive sustainable income in return. Farmers from Pyuthan and the surrounding municipalities have come together to combine their efforts, resources, and knowledge to enhance their overall well-being.

The Power of Land Pooling:

One of the key elements of our cooperative is land pooling, a practice where farmers contribute their individual land holdings to create larger, more efficient agricultural plots. This is particularly important in the rural regions of Nepal, as they suffer from fragmented land, or sparce areas of farmable land – individual plots are not large enough to expand into commercial operations. Establishing a cooperative pools together individual plots of land to create a unified harvest. More land allows farmers to transition from subsistence to commercial farming, generating sustainable income and removing barriers for market entry. This collaborative approach not only maximizes productivity but also allows for the implementation of sustainable farming practices that benefit both the environment and the farmers.

Shared Resources for Shared Success:

In a cooperative, the principle of shared resources plays a pivotal role. Our farmers pool not only their lands but also their knowledge, tools, and resources. This collective effort enables them to access modern farming techniques, irrigation systems, and organic practices that might be challenging for individual farmers to afford or implement.

Economic Empowerment:

By working together, our farmers gain greater bargaining power in the market. The cooperative acts as a unified entity, negotiating fair prices for their produce and ensuring that the benefits are distributed equitably among its members. This economic empowerment is crucial for rural farmers who often face the uncertainties of market fluctuations and limited access to buyers.

Building Sustainable Livelihoods:

The cooperative model goes beyond economic transactions; it is a pathway to sustainable livelihoods across all involved communities and municipalities. Through shared knowledge and resources, our farmers cultivate turmeric in an environmentally friendly manner, promoting organic practices that benefit both the land and the communities that depend on it.

Community Strength and Resilience:

Perhaps the most significant benefit of our cooperative is the sense of community strength and resilience it fosters. In times of challenges, be it climatic uncertainties or market volatility, our farmers stand together. The cooperative becomes a support system, ensuring that no farmer is left behind and that each member has the opportunity to thrive.
